Excellent Environmental and Corrosion Resistance Nomex Honeycomb Core
Excellent Environmental and Corrosion Resistance Nomex Honeycomb Core is a reinforcing layer for a sandwich-structured composite material, made primarily from aramid paper, mimicking the hexagonal cell structure of a natural honeycomb cell.
Unlike metallic honeycombs (e.g., aluminum or steel), which are prone to galvanic, pitting, and crevice corrosion when exposed to moisture, salt spray, or industrial chemicals, Nomex honeycomb core is made from meta-aramid fibers (Nomex® paper) impregnated with phenolic resin – both of which are inherently inert to most corrosive agents.
1. Outstanding resistance to moisture and humidity
· Nomex fibers are non-hygroscopic and do not absorb water. Even after prolonged exposure to high humidity or direct water immersion, the core maintains its structural integrity and mechanical properties.
· Unlike aluminum honeycomb, there is no risk of intergranular corrosion or galvanic reactions, especially when in contact with carbon fiber skins or metal fasteners.
2. Chemical resistance
· The aramid-phenolic composite resists attack from:
· Fuels, oils, hydraulic fluids (e.g., Skydrol)
· Weak acids and alkalis
· Salt spray (marine environments)
· De-icing fluids and cleaning solvents
· This makes Nomex honeycomb ideal for aircraft wing leading edges, nacelles, floor panels, and marine structures where chemical spills or condensation are common.
3. Biological and fungal resistance
· Nomex is non-nutritive to mold, mildew, fungi, and insects. It does not rot or support microbial growth, even in warm, humid, or tropical climates – a critical advantage over wood or natural fiber cores.
4. UV and thermal aging resistance
· Phenolic-impregnated Nomex exhibits good resistance to ultraviolet (UV) degradation when properly protected by surface skins (e.g., fiberglass, carbon fiber). Its service temperature ranges from -55°C to +180°C continuously, with no embrittlement or loss of corrosion resistance over decades.
5. Long-term durability in harsh environments
· Real-world applications prove its performance:
· Aerospace: 30+ years in aircraft interiors, cargo floors, and radomes – no corrosion-related failures.
· Marine: Used in high-speed ferries and naval ships – withstands saltwater atmosphere without rust or pitting.
· Rail & automotive: Floor panels and body panels exposed to road salts, moisture, and industrial pollution.
The working principle is based on the “I-beam” sandwich concept: the low-density aramid honeycomb core is sandwiched between high-strength face sheets (carbon fiber, fiberglass, or metal) bonded via resin film or autoclave processes. The high-strength face sheets bear tensile and compressive loads, while the aramid honeycomb core maintains the distance between face sheets, resists shear forces, and provides support. This structure efficiently distributes material away from the neutral axis, dramatically improving overall flexural rigidity and stability. Sandwich structures made with aramid honeycomb can greatly reduce structural weight while maintaining rigidity.
Aramid honeycomb core is produced through a process including adhesive application, stacking, hot pressing, expansion, resin impregnation, curing, and slicing. Adhesive application is critical for cell regularity and node strength; stacking positioning accuracy can be within ±0.05 mm, with automatic stacking speeds up to 360 sheets/hour. The resin impregnation and curing steps mainly control the core density, directly determining product yield and performance consistency.
